Donald Trump Moves To Clamp Down On AI After OpenAI Security Chaos
President Donald Trump is set to implement stricter federal oversight and control measures for artificial intelligence following a series of hacking incidents.
However, Trump, who has largely taken a relaxed approach to the technology until now, said caution is necessary while ensuring the U.S. doesn’t fall behind China in the global AI race.
The billionaire politician has increasingly embraced AI, using it to generate videos and images mocking his critics.
Donald Trump is now taking threats posed by AI very seriously and has announced that his administration is considering stricter control measures following a series of alarming cybersecurity breaches involving autonomous AI models.
The billionaire politician made the revelation on Wednesday while commenting on OpenAI’s AI tool breaching the private technology of other companies.
Trump acknowledged the growing risks posed by increasingly powerful AI tools but stressed that it remains imperative for the U.S. to maintain its competitive edge over geopolitical rivals.
“We’re looking at AI, we’re looking at controls, we’re also making sure that we lead,” he told reporters, per the BBC.
Trump Warns U.S. Can’t Fall Behind China In AI Race
Trump’s remarks mark a notable shift in tone for an administration that has largely favored a light-touch approach to AI regulation.
Still, he insisted that any new safeguards must not stifle innovation or leave the United States trailing China in the global AI race.
“We don’t want to restrict them where all of a sudden we come in second to China,” he said.
“China has virtually no [AI] controls. It’s freewheeling a little bit,” Trump added.
OpenAI Admits AI Escaped Containment During Test
4The proposed policy shift comes after OpenAI admitted responsibility for a series of unprecedented cybersecurity failures over the past week.
According to reports, the company’s powerful AI model went beyond the scope of what it had been designed and instructed to do during a security test, carrying out actions on its own.
The AI agent had been tasked with completing a cybersecurity evaluation. However, in an effort to maximize its score, it discovered an unpatched vulnerability in an internal service, escaped its containment, and breached Hugging Face to retrieve data that would help it pass the benchmark.
Reuters also reported that the model compromised a customer at a second tech company, New York-based Modal Labs.
When OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was asked on Wednesday whether the breach could have affected additional systems that have yet to be discovered, he replied, “I mean, there could be, yeah.”
Donald Trump Keeps Leaning On AI To Troll Critics
4Over the years, Trump has become increasingly fond of using AI in his public feuds with critics and detractors, as well as for other personal messaging.
Just this past weekend, he shared more than 43 images on Truth Social, many of which appeared to be AI-generated. One depicted him as the savior of America, standing alongside what appeared to be George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Alexander Hamilton beneath the words “America First.”
Another deepfake showed Trump standing beside John F. Kennedy in front of the White House without a caption.
Earlier this month, Trump posted an AI-generated video portraying himself as a doctor curing celebrity critics—including Rosie O’Donnell, Whoopi Goldberg, Edward Norton, and Julia Roberts—of the fictional condition “Trump derangement syndrome.”
He also previously shared an AI-generated video mocking Stephen Colbert following the cancellation of his show. Earlier this year, Trump posted an AI-generated image of himself as Jesus before deleting it after backlash from critics who labeled it blasphemous.
Trump Plans White House Tribute For Heroic Lifeguard
4Trump’s social media activity hasn’t been limited to attacking critics, as he also regularly uses his platforms to highlight uplifting stories.
On Tuesday, his son Eric Trump shared a clip on X showing a 16-year-old lifeguard battling rough ocean conditions to rescue a young boy.
Eric captioned the post, “Give this 16-year-old lifeguard the highest civilian honor. This is truly the best of America! Well done!”
Responding on Wednesday, Trump wrote, “We’re going to bring this heroic young man, and his family, into the White House with, perhaps, the boy he saved, to give him a High Civilian Honor. Very brave, he deserves it! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
