Court Orders Remand at Awka Correctional Centre

Following the formal reading of the charges, the presiding magistrate refused bail applications for the suspects, citing the severe nature of the offenses and the need to protect witnesses and victims from intimidation.

The court ordered that all twelve suspects be remanded in custody at the Awka Correctional Centre pending the formal assignment of trial dates and legal advice from the State Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Zero Tolerance for Gender-Based Violence

SP Tochukwu Ikenga maintained that the synchronized arraignments send a clear signal that the command will completely dismantle domestic and sexual abuse networks across Anambra State.

“The Command reiterates its zero tolerance for sexual and gender-based violence, child abuse, and all forms of violence against vulnerable persons,” Ikenga stated. “The Command also assures the public that the Police will continue to diligently investigate such cases and ensure that offenders are brought to justice in accordance with the law.”

Child rights advocates in Awka have lauded the rapid intervention of the police command, noting that utilizing specialized gender courts will accelerate justice for the victims and keep dangerous sexual predators off the streets.
