Concern as Newly Commissioned Osun Flyover Develops Cracks After Heavy Rainfall

Concern has trailed the condition of the newly commissioned LAMECO Flyover in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, after a section of the bridge developed visible cracks and a depression less than a month after it was opened to traffic.

The 672-metre flyover, commissioned by Governor Ademola Adeleke on July 1, 2026, reportedly sustained damage following an overnight downpour that lasted for nearly eight hours between Thursday and Friday.

Residents who passed through the area observed a noticeable depression on one section of the carriageway, with cracks appearing on the asphalt surface. The damage forced motorists and commercial motorcyclists to slow down while navigating the affected portion before traffic authorities eventually restricted access.

The development has raised concerns among commuters and residents, many of whom called on the Osun State Government to carry out immediate repairs to prevent further deterioration and ensure the safety of road users.

The damaged section also disrupted the normal flow of traffic within the Osogbo metropolis, forcing many motorists to seek alternative routes.

Security operatives from the Osun Amotekun Corps later cordoned off the affected section of the flyover, preventing both vehicles and pedestrians from accessing the bridge while officials assessed the extent of the damage.

The incident has attracted widespread public attention because the flyover was officially inaugurated barely three weeks ago as part of the Adeleke administration’s infrastructure development programme.

Reacting to the development, the Osun State chapter of the Accord Party dismissed suggestions of structural failure, alleging instead that the damage resulted from deliberate acts of sabotage.

In a statement issued by its state chairman, Victor Akande, the party claimed it had received what it described as credible reports indicating a coordinated campaign to vandalise public infrastructure executed by the current administration.

According to the statement, the alleged acts were politically motivated and intended to tarnish the achievements of Governor Ademola Adeleke ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.

“These acts are not ordinary criminal activities but appear to be part of a calculated attempt by desperate elements in the opposition APC to undermine and discredit the remarkable achievements of the current administration ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.

“Having failed to match the Governor’s impressive record of performance, these elements seem determined to destroy the very projects that are transforming communities across the state in order to create a false impression of government failure,” the statement read.

The party condemned the alleged sabotage, stressing that public infrastructure belongs to all residents of Osun State regardless of political affiliation.

It also called on security agencies and other relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, identify anyone responsible if criminal activity is established, and ensure that the damaged section of the flyover is repaired without delay to restore normal traffic flow.
