‘Call them at 1 am and…’: Burj Khalifa builder makes surprising remark about Indians, reveals why they top Emaar’s hiring list

Mohamed Alabbar, the chairman of Emaar, the company behind the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, has heaped praise on Indians for their dedication and work ethic. He explained why Indians continue to top his company’s hiring list, saying their discipline, commitment and willingness to work at any hour make them stand out globally.

Speaking in a candid and light-hearted manner, Alabbar said the reason behind the strong presence of Indians in his company is not just talent or academic knowledge, but their unmatched determination and sincerity towards work.

‘Indian work ethic is globally unmatched’

During a summit in Abu Dhabi, Alabbar openly spoke about the qualities he admires most in Indian professionals. He said that while talent exists everywhere, the level of hard work shown by Indians is difficult to find elsewhere.

According to him, Indian employees are so committed to their responsibilities that they are ready to respond even if they receive a work call at 1 am. He stressed that discipline and hard work are more important than simply being smart.

Sharing his own perspective, Alabbar said his IQ may be average, but his ability to work hard is what sets him apart. He described this mindset as ‘positive paranoia’, a constant drive and obsession with staying focused on work and performance.

‘There is no better market than India’

Apart from praising Indian professionals, Alabbar also described India as one of the strongest and most stable markets in the world.

He questioned whether there is any other country today that is as large, stable and consistently growing as India, before answering himself: ‘Absolutely not.’

This, he said, is one of the reasons why the Emaar Group is now directly partnering with universities to recruit talent.

‘When talent stops working hard, hard work defeats talent,’ Alabbar said, adding that working with Indians gives him confidence because they continue to stand by the organisation even during difficult times.

The Emaar chief also recalled the 2008 financial crisis and the Covid-19 pandemic while discussing the importance of resilience in business.

He said Indian professionals possess strong mental agility and an impressive ability to quickly learn new technologies, which makes them highly valuable at the global level.

According to Alabbar, this is why Indians play a major role in many of the company’s large projects, from Dubai to Europe.
