Burna Boy sets new Spotify record for an African artist
Nigerian Afrobeats star Burna Boy has set a new all-time record for the highest number of monthly listeners ever achieved by an African artist on Spotify.
The Grammy-winning singer recently surpassed the previous record of 46.58 million monthly listeners, which was held by South African star Tyla. Burna Boy has now climbed to 47.3 million monthly listeners, becoming the most-streamed African artist in Spotify history by that metric.
The surge in his streaming numbers has been driven largely by his FIFA World Cup collaboration with Shakira, titled Dai Dai.
The track also reached No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Top Songs chart, making Burna Boy the first African artist to top the chart since Wizkid achieved the feat through his collaboration with Drake on One Dance in 2016.
With his current trajectory, Burna Boy is on course to become the first African artist to reach 50 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
World Music Awards, announcing the record, said …
“Burna Boy breaks the all-time Record as the African Artist with the Most Monthly Listeners in Spotify history (46.84M), surpassing Tyla (46.5M)! 💪🦍🐐👑❤️🔥”
