Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has delivered a strong message to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, declaring that Nigerians are becoming increasingly aware of political realities and are prepared to hold leaders accountable for their actions and policies.

According to a report by Vanguard, Atiku made the remarks in a statement released on Friday, May 29, 2026. The statement, signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, assessed the current state of governance in the country and highlighted what the former presidential candidate described as the growing political consciousness among citizens.

In the statement, Atiku argued that Nigerians are no longer willing to accept what he described as political complacency, unfulfilled promises, and attempts to shape public perception through official narratives that do not reflect the realities experienced by ordinary citizens.

He maintained that the country’s democratic process provides citizens with the opportunity to evaluate the performance of elected officials and make informed decisions about the future direction of governance.

According to Atiku, increasing economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, and the rising cost of living have pushed many Nigerians to become more engaged in national affairs and more interested in demanding accountability from those in power.

“The era of taking Nigerians for granted is coming to a close. The people are awake,” Atiku declared in the statement.

The former Vice President noted that Nigerians are becoming more informed about public policy issues and are paying closer attention to the impact of government decisions on their daily lives.

He stressed that citizens now have greater access to information and are increasingly capable of assessing whether political promises made during campaigns are being fulfilled.

Atiku further argued that democratic governance is strengthened when citizens actively participate in public discourse and demand transparency from public office holders.

“The days when citizens could be ignored or taken for granted are gradually disappearing because Nigerians now understand the power of their voices and their votes,” he said.

The opposition figure also emphasized the importance of accountability in governance, stating that elected leaders must remain responsive to the needs and concerns of the people.

According to him, government performance should be measured not by official statements or publicity campaigns but by tangible improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens.

He maintained that economic stability, improved security, quality education, healthcare, and job creation remain among the key expectations Nigerians have from their leaders.
