In a recent interview on Trust TV, Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central and is a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), revisited political statements made during the build-up to the 2023 presidential election, particularly predictions surrounding the performance of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

During the interview, Umeh addressed comments made by political figures ahead of the election and their accuracy in light of the eventual outcome.

Speaking on the issue, Umeh stated:

“Soludo has not apologized to Nigerians after predicting that Obi would not get 25% of the vote in two states.”

He made the remark while responding to questions on the reliability of political forecasts and the public reactions that followed the 2023 general election results.

According to Umeh, many political leaders and analysts made bold predictions about the strength and reach of various presidential candidates before Nigerians went to the polls.

He argued that several of those predictions did not reflect the actual voting pattern observed across different regions of the country.

Speaking further, he said:

“Before the election, there were many statements made about how candidates would perform, but the results showed a different reality on the ground.”

Umeh maintained that political commentary during election periods often influences public perception, even when such predictions are not based on verifiable electoral data.

According to him:

“Some of those early statements shaped how people viewed the candidates, but the outcome of the election eventually told a different story.”

The senator noted that the 2023 presidential election demonstrated the unpredictability of voter behavior, especially in a politically diverse country like Nigeria.

He added:

“The election showed that Nigerians can surprise political analysts when they make their final decisions at the ballot box.”

Umeh also suggested that political leaders should be more cautious when making public predictions about electoral outcomes, stressing the importance of accuracy and responsibility in political communication.

According to him:

“Leaders and commentators must be careful with their words because they can influence public opinion in ways that may not reflect reality.”
