The appointment of Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has continued to generate widespread reactions across the country.

The announcement was made through a statement released by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, who revealed that Aina would take over from Professor Is-haq Oloyede when his second tenure ends on July 31, 2026.

According to the Presidency, Aina, who will clock 40 in July, is set to become the youngest individual ever appointed to lead JAMB.

Since the announcement, discussions have intensified on social media and within educational circles, with many people focusing on his youthful age, impressive academic profile, and contributions to technology-based educational reforms.

Professor Aina is currently a lecturer in Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University. He gained recognition as one of the youngest professors in Nigeria within the Computer Engineering discipline after attaining professorship at the age of 39.

His academic journey includes studying Computer Systems Engineering at the University of Kent. He later obtained a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security, as well as a doctorate in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University. In addition, he completed the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School.

The Presidency also disclosed that Aina’s connection with JAMB dates back to his National Youth Service period, where he became familiar with the agency’s admission operations and data management systems.

Outside the university environment, he has reportedly collaborated with examination agencies such as the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), contributing to projects involving examination security, information technology systems, and digital innovation.

He is equally a member of several professional organisations, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).

President Tinubu expressed optimism that Aina would sustain and improve upon the progress achieved under Oloyede’s leadership by introducing more reforms, technological innovation, and institutional development within JAMB.

Many observers believe his emergence could signal a new era for the examination body, especially in the areas of digital transformation, examination administration, and the admissions process.
