Nigeria’s political atmosphere has heated up again as the House of Representatives has issued a sharp response to its Minority Caucus after lawmakers demanded that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu either prioritise insecurity or step down from office.

The Minority Caucus, led by Minority Leader Fred Agbedi, recently held a press briefing accusing the administration of being distracted by 2027 re-election politics while Nigerians continue to face rising cases of kidnappings, killings, and economic hardship across the country.

In a strongly worded reaction released on Friday and signed by House Spokesman Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., the House acknowledged public concerns over insecurity but insisted that opposition lawmakers are not exempt from responsibility in solving Nigeria’s challenges.

According to the House, security problems in the country did not emerge overnight and cannot be fixed through political pressure or emotional statements. It stressed that meaningful progress is already being made by security agencies, including efforts to dismantle criminal networks and rescue abducted citizens.

The lawmakers also pushed back against the Minority Caucus, reminding them that as members of the legislature, they hold constitutional powers to shape laws, approve budgets, and influence national security strategy. In their view, this makes them co-owners of the system, not outside critics.

The House emphasized that governance requires collaboration across party lines, stating that security is a collective responsibility that cannot be reduced to partisan blame games or public accusations.
