BREAKING: Kwankwaso Hosts Consensus Meeting As Gaya Loses Senate Ticket
According to a report by DAILY POST on Monday 25th May 2026, former Kano South Senator, Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, has failed in his attempt to secure a return to the Senate after the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) picked former NARTO leader, Alkasim Ibrahim Batayya, as its flagbearer for the 2027 elections.
Gaya, who recently joined the NDC after leaving both the APC and ADC, had been eyeing the party’s senatorial ticket for Kano South but was instead dropped following a consensus decision within the party.
The agreement was reportedly reached at a political gathering held at the Kano residence of former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Party spokesperson Mansur Kurugu confirmed that Gaya accepted the outcome and pledged full support for Batayya’s candidacy.
He added that the consensus arrangement would be used to determine other candidates in the state, avoiding internal primaries.
A video later surfaced showing Gaya publicly endorsing the party’s decision.
The development represents a major setback for the former senator, who served Kano South from 2015 to 2023 and also previously governed Kano State during the Third Republic.
Batayya is now expected to contest against the current holder of the seat, Senator Sumaila, in what is shaping up to be a competitive 2027 race.
