He said this situation is frightening because it shows how deeply the United States could be drawn into a conflict the president would rather avoid, yet cannot walk away from given the strategic importance of the strait.

In his words, David Ignatius said, “That’s a frightening thought that we could be drawn so deep into a conflict that President Trump clearly wants to get out of, but knows that he can’t get out of it now because the Iranians control the strait of Hormuz, a key waterway.”
