According to a report by The Times Of Israel on July 20, 2026, the United States is preparing for the possibility of expanding its military campaign against Iran, even as senior officials acknowledge that the country faces significant operational constraints. The report, citing The Washington Post, says Washington is weighing broader military options while reinforcing its presence in the Middle East.

A US official told The Washington Post that military planners are making preparations for a larger conflict with Iran. “The US is planning for a wider war,” says the official. The official adds that the US is sending more military aircraft to the Middle East.Achieve Your Desires. (In Your Undertakings) Business world. Career. Private or government work. Selection/approval. The report states that the Pentagon’s ability to sustain a prolonged military campaign could be affected by shortages of critical weapons. According to the outlet, existing stockpiles of air defense systems and long-range missiles are insufficient for an extended conflict, limiting the military’s flexibility should fighting escalate further.

The report also notes that the US military may face challenges in deploying additional ground forces because of battle damage already suffered during the ongoing confrontation with Iran.

The official also raised concerns about whether decision-makers in Washington fully understand the extent of the military’s current limitations. “We do not have enough to safely sustain operations, and I don’t think the White House is aware of that,” says the official.

The developments come as tensions between the United States and Iran remain high, with both sides continuing military activities that have heightened concerns about a broader regional conflict.
