Former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has alleged that Nigeria’s major political parties do not maintain proper membership registers, claiming that his party, the African Action Congress (AAC), remains one of the few with a functional digital registration system.

Sowore made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television on Friday, May 22, 2026, while responding to questions about party registration systems and compliance with electoral guidelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

When asked how many people had registered for his party through the digital platform requested by INEC, Sowore said the AAC had not yet finalized its submission.

Speaking during the interview, he stated:

“We haven’t finally submitted. And that’s what this court judgment says. So if you have submitted now, the court says you can reopen your portal and start again. We never stopped anyway.”

He explained that the African Action Congress adopted an online membership registration system as far back as 2018, long before many other political parties transitioned to digital processes.

According to him:

“Our party, the AAC, started online registration in 2018 when nobody was doing it.”

Sowore further alleged that during the 2022 electoral process, political parties were directed to submit their membership registers to INEC for verification and record purposes.

He claimed that when this directive was carried out, only the AAC was able to provide a complete and verifiable register of its members.

In his words, he said:

“INEC confessed to us that all these APC, PDP don’t have party register.”

Sowore argued that the revelation highlighted deeper structural problems within Nigeria’s major political parties, particularly regarding transparency and internal record-keeping.

According to him, many of the dominant parties rely heavily on informal or outdated membership systems that are not properly digitized or independently verifiable.

He stated that the absence of reliable membership registers raises questions about internal democracy and party legitimacy in Nigeria’s political system.

Sowore added that a proper digital registration system is essential for ensuring transparency, accountability and credibility in party operations.

According to him:

“If you don’t even know your members, then you cannot claim to have a truly democratic structure. That is why we insisted on building a proper digital system from the beginning.”
