ADC: I Will Accept Free, Fair Presidential Primary, Says Amaechi 

Former Minister of Transportation and key opposition figure, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has declared his willingness to submit to a free and fair presidential primary election under the banner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), should the party adopt him as its standard-bearer for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking Monday in Abuja during a meeting with a high-powered delegation of ADC leaders from across the country, Amaechi stressed that his decision to consider the party’s presidential ticket is underpinned by his long-standing commitment to internal democracy and transparent electoral processes within political parties.

“I have never and will never campaign under a platform where the primary is rigged or manipulated. If the ADC offers me the opportunity, I will only accept the outcome of a free, fair, and credible presidential primary. Anything less is a betrayal of the Nigerian people,” Amaechi told the delegation.

The former Rivers State governor, who has been a vocal critic of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) since leaving the party, is widely regarded as a heavyweight contender for the presidency in 2027. His potential candidacy under the ADC adds a dramatic new twist to an already fluid political landscape.

Sources close to the meeting revealed that the ADC leadership has been in talks with Amaechi for several months, seeing him as a candidate capable of uniting the opposition and giving the ruling party a fierce challenge. The party’s National Chairman, Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu, was represented at the meeting by a delegation led by the National Secretary.

“The African Democratic Congress is a party built on principles of justice, equity, and transparency. We are not a party where the highest bidder wins a ticket. We are looking for a credible candidate who shares our values, and we have found that in Rt. Hon. Amaechi,” the delegation leader said.

Amaechi’s remarks come at a time when internal democracy in Nigerian political parties has been repeatedly questioned. In recent election cycles, allegations of imposition of candidates, vote-buying during primaries, and manipulation of delegate lists have marred the credibility of the country’s political processes.

Political analysts say Amaechi’s insistence on a transparent primary is a strategic move to distance himself from the well-documented controversies that have plagued the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) alike.
