Political analyst and former Director of Research at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Prof. Femi Otubanjo, has described the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a platform primarily structured around the presidential ambition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during a television interview with Arise News on the evolving political realignments within Nigeria’s opposition landscape, Otubanjo said the emergence of Atiku as the ADC presidential candidate was never in doubt, arguing that the party had been positioned for that outcome from its inception.

He maintained that the internal structure and strategic alignments within the ADC made it highly predictable that Atiku would dominate the presidential race once he formally entered the contest.

According to him, the party’s organization reflects a broader political design that appears to center on a single dominant figure rather than a fully competitive multi-aspirant platform.

“ADC is simply a special purpose vehicle created mainly for Atiku’s presidential ambition,” Otubanjo stated while discussing the internal dynamics of the opposition coalition.

He made the remark while analyzing what he described as the structural realities shaping opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.

Otubanjo further explained that political parties in Nigeria are often formed or restructured around influential individuals who possess strong national networks and established electoral experience.

He argued that in such arrangements, internal competition is frequently limited by pre-existing alliances and the strategic interests of key power brokers within the party.

The analyst noted that Atiku’s long-standing presence in national politics and repeated presidential bids have contributed to his dominant position within the ADC framework.
