According to a report by The Punch on Thursday, May 21, 2026, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has withdrawn from the APC governorship primary in Rivers State, saying his decision was necessary to preserve peace, unity and political stability in the state ahead of the 2027 election.

Governor Fubara announced his withdrawal on Wednesday night after weeks of tension within the Rivers APC. In a statement, he said leadership requires sacrifice and that the interest of Rivers people must come before personal ambition.

The governor explained that he reached the decision after consultations with family, political associates and supporters. He also urged his loyalists to remain calm and continue supporting the party despite recent political setbacks.

Fubara’s withdrawal came shortly after many of his allies failed to secure tickets in the APC House of Assembly and National Assembly primaries. Several politicians believed to be loyal to him were reportedly disqualified from the contests.

Former APC governorship candidate Tonye Cole also stepped down from the race, citing party unity and agreements reached during meetings with APC leaders.

With both Fubara and Cole out of the contest, Kingsley Chinda emerged as the sole aspirant for the Rivers APC governorship primary. Political sources said the lawmaker enjoys the backing of allies of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The development is the latest chapter in the long-running political battle between Fubara and Wike, which has shaped Rivers politics since 2023 and led to a period of emergency rule in the state in 2025.
