Trump became the focus of online discussion following an unusual moment captured during Senator Lindsey Graham’s funeral, where social media users speculated about the behavior of a man seated directly behind the president.

The service, held on 28 July, brought together several prominent political figures, including Vice President JD Vance, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

However, attention soon shifted to a clip circulating on social media that appeared to show Trump sitting quietly while a man behind him displayed a series of noticeable facial expressions.

Several social media users suggested the man’s reactions were linked to Trump, with some reviving long-standing rumors about the president’s health and personal hygiene. Others mocked the situation, joking that the attendee looked “disgusted” and appeared to be struggling with an unpleasant smell or trying to endure an uncomfortable moment.

As theories spread across social media, body language expert Judi James offered a different interpretation of the footage. Speaking to The Mirror US, James cautioned against assuming the expressions were signs of disgust. “This guy’s expression does need, in all fairness, to be put into context,” he said.

According to James, genuine disgust is typically accompanied by additional facial cues, such as a wrinkled nose and lip movements.

“When it’s just the top lip, it can be used as a gesture to show someone our dislike for something that was said or done, but this man is not facing anyone or in any kind of conversation,” James explained. “If he were, it might be more of a performed gesture to show disagreement than a ‘survival’-based response of actual disgust.

Instead, James suggested the man’s behavior could have reflected a range of emotions more appropriate to the occasion, including sadness, concentration or grief.

This was an event centered on unity, loss and affection, Judi said, adding that the attendee frequently looked around the room and adjusted his clothing throughout the service. She noted that some of the expressions appeared to evolve into signs of regret or sadness rather than disgust.

James also raised the possibility that the man may have been working in a professional capacity.

She pointed out that Trump appeared to speak with him at the conclusion of the service, which could indicate he was a member of the president’s security or support team.

At the end of the service, Trump did appear to talk to him to check where he should go or when he should leave, suggesting the man might have been part of his team, in which case the display could have been about “focusing and concentrating.”

The funeral was held in honor of Graham, who died on 11 July at the age of 71. During the service, Trump paid tribute to the longtime senator, describing him as a “giant of the United States Senate” and reflecting on his decades of public service.

The funeral also generated a separate round of online criticism after footage appeared to show Trump briefly touching Graham’s casket as he stepped away from the podium following his eulogy.

The gesture quickly divided opinion, with some critics describing it as inappropriate for such a solemn occasion. In contrast, others viewed it as a respectful farewell to a longtime friend and political ally.

A critic accused the president of lacking “empathy,” writing, “A man devoid of any empathy has no idea how to show compassion during a man’s funeral. So sad and pathetic.”

But in defense of Trump’s actions, one supporter stated, “It is a common gesture of love bidding farewell at funerals, from friends and family. I’ve been to many funerals in my many years. I have seen it at most.”

During his remarks at the funeral, Trump reflected on his years of friendship with Graham and acknowledged the emotional weight of the moment.

“I will say, this memorial service — it’s so hard to say: memorial service for Lindsey,” he told mourners. The president also suggested that Graham’s presence was still being felt by those gathered to honor him.

“Our nation needs more men and women like that great person sitting, laying — wherever he may be,” Trump said. “I think I know where he is, and I think he’s up there. I think he’s watching us. I’m pretty sure of it.”

In other parts of his eulogy, Trump recalled one of Graham’s “finest” moments when he defended Brett Kavanaugh during the 2018 Supreme Court confirmation hearings.

The president said, “His impassioned defense of a wonderful person, a great gentleman, Justice Kavanaugh, ended a disgraceful attack on this very good man and gave us one of the greatest moments the Senate has ever seen.”

He added, “It was a truly monumental moment in Senate history. I believe it was Lindsey’s perhaps finest hour.”
