Blind Man With No Licence Drives 150 Miles on Motorway After Drinking Four Bottles of Wine
Police in England were shocked after stopping a drunk driver on a motorway and discovering that he was almost completely blind and had never held a driving licence.
The incident happened in the early hours of June 29 on the M6 motorway near Carlisle.
Police officers noticed an Opel Meriva moving dangerously from one lane to another and onto the hard shoulder.
When they stopped the vehicle, they discovered that the driver, Anthony Hall, was drunk. He also had no driving licence or insurance and had taken his partner’s car without permission.
During a recent court hearing, Hall admitted to drink-driving, driving without a licence or insurance and taking the vehicle without consent.
His lawyer told the court that Hall was dealing with relationship and financial problems and had acted out of desperation.
Hall told the court that he decided to drive to Scotland after drinking four bottles of wine with his partner.
Although he had never owned a driving licence, Hall said he had worked around cars for much of his life and knew how to drive.
However, he had lost almost all of his eyesight about two years earlier.
Police said Hall even stopped at a petrol station during the journey to refuel. Staff reportedly helped him, but nobody reported his condition to police.
Hall managed to travel around 150 miles, or 241 kilometres, despite being nearly blind and drunk.
He explained that he could still faintly see lights.
To find his way, he drove behind a large truck and followed its taillights.
However, he struggled to keep the car in its lane, which eventually attracted the attention of police.
Despite the dangerous journey, Hall did not cause an accident.
He was sentenced to 36 weeks in prison, suspended for 18 months.
He was also ordered to remain sober for 90 days and take part in a rehabilitation programme.
