Atiku Reacts to Attack on President Trump, Calls for End to Political Violence

A United States-based lobbying firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C, representing former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has issued a statement condemning the attempted assassination of U.S. President Donald Trump.

The statement, released on Monday via the firm’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account, relayed Atiku’s message to Trump, strongly denouncing political violence and urging respect for democratic principles.

“We are posting former Nigerian Vice President @atiku’s message to President @realDonaldTrump, which we passed on earlier today,” the firm said.

In the message addressed to Trump, Atiku described the attack as an assault not only on an individual but on democracy itself.

“I strongly condemn the attempted assassination against you and any act of violence directed at public officials. Such actions are not only an attack on an individual, but on the very foundation of democracy itself,” he stated.

He emphasised that political disagreements must never lead to violence, stressing the importance of the rule of law and democratic institutions.

“The rule of law, respect for institutions, and the will of the people must always prevail over fear and force,” he added.

Atiku also extended his sympathy to Trump, his family, and others affected by the incident, while praising security operatives for their swift response.

“My thoughts are with you, your beautiful family, and all those affected. I also commend the security personnel whose swift and decisive action helped prevent further harm,” he said.

He further called for unity and a renewed commitment to democratic values and the sanctity of human life.

“This moment underscores the need for strength, unity, and an unwavering commitment to defend democratic values and the sanctity of human life. May Almighty God bless and protect you, your family, and the great American people,” the statement concluded.

The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., where Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance were present. A suspected gunman, identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, was subdued after injuring a Secret Service officer, while all dignitaries were safely evacuated.
