Athletic Club Appoint Edin Terzic as New Head Coach

Athletic Club have confirmed the appointment of Edin Terzic as their new head coach on a two-year deal.

Terzic, 43, will officially take charge at the beginning of next season and is set to be unveiled by the Bilbao-based club this summer. He replaces Ernesto Valverde, who announced in March that he would step down after four years in charge.

The German tactician arrives in Spain following two spells with Borussia Dortmund, where he earned praise for steering the team through major title challenges. During his time there, he won the German Cup in 2021, narrowly missed out on the Bundesliga title in 2023, and guided Dortmund to the UEFA Champions League Final in 2024.

Terzic stepped away from management after Dortmund’s 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid at Wembley, but Athletic have now moved swiftly to bring him back as they prepare for a new chapter.

Former player Andoni Iraola had been strongly linked with a return to San Mamés after confirming he would leave AFC Bournemouth this summer. However, Athletic ultimately opted for Terzic, signalling a preference for fresh ideas and proven European experience.

Before managing Dortmund, Terzic served as an assistant to Slaven Bilic at both Beşiktaş and West Ham United, gaining valuable experience across different leagues.

Athletic currently sit eighth in La Liga with four matches remaining this season.
