Amaechi made pregnant woman give birth in prison – Wike alleges

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has leveled severe allegations against Rotimi Amaechi, the vice presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), claiming his past actions as governor of Rivers State led to a pregnant woman giving birth in prison custody.

 

Wike made the assertion on Wednesday during his monthly media briefing with journalists, pointing to the prolonged closure of courts in Rivers State during Amaechi’s tenure from 2007 to 2015.

 

The FCT Minister voiced strong disapproval toward the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for inviting Amaechi to address its recently concluded annual conference in Port Harcourt, arguing that public figures with such records should not be offered platforms by legal institutions.

 

“Rotimi Amaechi, who wants to be vice president today, once shut down the court in Rivers State and made a pregnant woman to give birth in the prison,” Wike alleged.

 

He added that executive actions undermining judicial infrastructure ought to face permanent public accountability: “If, as I’m sitting today as minister of the FCT, who is seen as governor of the FCT, and I call for courts to shut down, I should not be given a platform to defend that.”
