Adamawa govt reviews pension, sets new minimum at N50,000

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has announced a new minimum monthly pension of N50,000 for retired civil servants.

This represents a significant increase from the N4,000 received by the least-paid pensioners in the state for decades, a situation pensioners have long protested against.

The governor announced the increase on Friday during a live appearance on the Hausa programme, Taba Kidi Taba Karatu, on Adamawa Broadcasting Corporation, Yola, where he described the previous minimum pension as an injustice that his administration had decided to address.

He said the adjustment reflects his administration’s appreciation of the years pensioners spent in service, adding that the gesture aligns with ongoing efforts to improve the living conditions of both serving and retired workers.

The state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Mohammed Sali, could not be reached for comment by the time of filing this report on Friday evening.

However, about a month ago, he recalled that N4,000 had been the monthly earning of the least-paid pensioners in the state for more than 20 years.
