“A seer said the child was a python” — Woman throws 5-year-old child into Edo river
A woman has been taken into custody by community members in Edo State after she allegedly threw her five-year-old child into a river, following instructions reportedly given by a self-acclaimed seer in Benin City.
The incident occurred in Ovia North-East Local Government Area and first came to public attention on Tuesday after videos circulated on social media, sparking widespread shock and outrage.
According to accounts shared alongside the footage, the woman was allegedly told by the spiritualist that the child was a python in human form and responsible for her inability to have more children.
In the video, the woman reportedly claimed she had struggled to conceive again after giving birth to the child, who she said had been unable to walk since birth. She said this led her to seek spiritual help.
She further alleged that a self-proclaimed seer in Benin City told her the child was the cause of her fertility challenges and advised her to get rid of him.
“The seer told me that the child was a python and that if I did not get rid of the child, I would either continue giving birth to children with the same condition or never conceive again,” she was quoted as saying.
Following the alleged instruction, she was said to have thrown the child into a river.
The incident has since triggered strong reactions online, with many condemning the act and questioning the influence of self-styled spiritual leaders.
Some viewers described the act as unforgivable, while others expressed mixed emotions, with some blaming the alleged seer and others questioning the woman’s decision.
