A Life Well Lived: A Tribute to Ezinne (Chief) Christiana Opara, JP Ugochinyere Mbaise (1943-2026)

Speaking during the Sermon on the Mount, our Lord Jesus Christ made one of the most profound statements that serves, not only as a mirror for self-introspection, but also as a continuous guiding light for those who want to live a life of earnest devotion to God. That statement is recorded in Mathew 5;8, where He stated; “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

The remarkable truth about this beatitude is that it shifts our attention from outward appearances to the inner condition of the human heart, teaching us that in God’s perspective, purity is not measured by religious rituals, social status or public reputation, but by the sincerity of one’s thoughts, motives and desires. It also teaches us that a pure heart is one that is wholly devoted to God; free from hypocrisy, bitterness and divided loyalties. Such a heart, therefore, becomes a dwelling place for God’s presence and a reflection of His character.

As one reflects over the deeper meaning of this text, one realizes that the promise attached to this beatitude is extraordinary, for it unambiguously states that “they shall see God.” This means that while no one can fully behold God’s glory in this temporal life, those with pure hearts experience His presence, guidance and peace in deeper ways. They recognise His hand at work in everyday circumstances and enjoy an intimate fellowship that transforms their perspective on life. But, even beyond that, this promise ultimately points to the glorious hope of eternity, when the redeemed will stand before God and see Him face to face, enjoying everlasting communion with Him.

So, in a world that is filled with distractions, compromise and moral confusion, Christ’s call to purity remains as relevant as ever. For a pure heart not only brings personal blessings but also becomes a powerful witness to others, radiating God’s love, truth and holiness. Those who pursue purity discover that the greatest reward is not earthly recognition or success, but the incomparable privilege of knowing God more deeply and one day seeing Him in all His glory when they transcend from this temporal existence called life. What a joy it is to see God in His glory!

To those who lived with a pure heart while they are still on earth, especially those who lived with total devotion to God through their service to their fellow men, the transition to glory becomes a glorious home coming for they shall then receive the promise of the Master in full measure. It is in the light of the above that the life, times and legacy of Ezinne Christiana Opara JP, affectionately known as Ugochinyere Mbaise would be contextualized and celebrated, for those who knew her closely would testify that she was indeed a woman of pure heart who served God with absolute devotion.

Born on the 12th of December 1943, into the humble and honourable family of Pa Oparaku and Mama Nwagbara Onuoha of Umuanuma, Nguru, Mbaise, Imo State, she was the third and last child of her parents. From her earliest years, she displayed qualities that would later define her remarkable life; a life defined by grace, service, kindness and uncommon generosity. She inherited the values of hard work, humility, respect and compassion that characterised her family and she nurtured these virtues throughout her lifetime.
Predictively, her parents gave her the name Christiana and she honoured that name in every sense of the word. Conscious of the true meaning of her name, she did not merely profess Christianity; she lived it daily. Thus, her faith was not confined to the walls of the Church or expressed only in prayers, it found expression in acts of kindness, generosity, forgiveness and unwavering trust in God. She embodied the Gospel through her everyday life, becoming a living testimony of God’s love to all who encountered her.

There are people whose lives are measured by the number of years they spend on earth. Then there are those whose lives are measured by the impact they make on humanity. Ezinne belonged to the latter, for she lived with purpose, loved without reservation, served without seeking recognition and gave without counting the cost. Long before charity became fashionable, she quietly practised compassion without seeking applause or recognition, for she understood that true religion is demonstrated by caring for those who cannot repay us.

A quintessential woman with a heart of gold, Chief Ezinne Christiana Opara embodied the true virtues of humility, strength, discipline and godliness. She stood as a beacon of hope to many widows, the downtrodden, the vulnerable and the forgotten in society. Her doors were never closed to those in need, and her hands were constantly extended in charity, encouragement and support. She believed that true greatness was measured, not by wealth or status, but by the number of lives touched with love and compassion.
Unsurprisingly, one of her defining qualities was her extraordinary generosity. For her home became a refuge for many. Her doors remained open to those seeking help, guidance or simply a listening ear. No one came to her and left empty-handed or empty-hearted. Whether offering food to the hungry, financial assistance to those in distress, encouragement to the discouraged or prayers to the afflicted, she gave freely because she believed that blessings become meaningful only when shared.

Her remarkable charity earned her the distinguished title of Ezinne, which means the “Good Mother.” This title was not bestowed because of wealth or social standing. It was earned through years of genuine service, compassion and sacrificial love. For she became a mother, not only to the children she gave birth to, but also to countless others whose lives she nurtured with kindness and wisdom.

One distinguishing attribute of her generosity was that it was never selective, for she reached across social, economic and cultural boundaries with equal kindness. Whether comforting a grieving widow, supporting an orphan, encouraging a struggling family or assisting someone facing hardship, she responded with remarkable empathy. She never asked whether people deserved her help, she simply asked how she could help. Her philosophy of life was simple yet profound: greatness is measured not by possessions but by service; not by titles but by character; not by what we accumulate but by what we give away.

While there are many qualities for which Ezinne would always be remembered, her role as an ardent and devoted Catholic deserves special recognition. For Mama, faith was the centre around which every aspect of life revolved. She served God wholeheartedly, participating actively in the life of the Church with unwavering commitment. She found joy in worship, strength in prayer and fulfilment in serving God’s people.

Her dedication to the Catholic faith was unwavering, evident in her active involvement and immense contributions to the Church and particularly to the Catholic Women Organization (CWO), where she played impactful and admirable roles over the years. She was a woman deeply rooted in prayer, service and Christian values, inspiring many women to remain steadfast in faith and virtue.

Her involvement in the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) was, therefore, both inspiring and exemplary. For she did not simply occupy positions of responsibility; she transformed them into opportunities for service. She encouraged women to embrace Christian virtues, strengthened family values and promoted unity within the Church community. Through her leadership, countless women discovered renewed confidence in their faith and their calling as daughters of God.

A woman of deep spiritual insight, prayer was her constant companion. During moments of joy, she gave thanks; during seasons of trial, she trusted God and during periods of uncertainty, she sought divine guidance. Her unwavering faith became a source of inspiration to family members and all who knew her, for she demonstrated that a life rooted in God remains steadfast regardless of life’s storms.

Her appointment as a Justice of the Peace (JP) reflected the confidence that was placed in her character. It recognised her integrity, fairness, wisdom and commitment to justice. And she carried this responsibility with dignity, humility and impartiality, becoming a trusted voice in resolving disputes and promoting harmony within her community. But beyond the title, she was a natural peacemaker, for whenever and wherever conflicts arose, Mama sought reconciliation rather than division. She believed that forgiveness was stronger than resentment and that unity was always preferable to discord. Many families, friendships and relationships owe their restoration to her gentle intervention and wise counsel.
Ezinne also became a beacon of hope to widows, the vulnerable and the less privileged, for she possessed an uncommon ability to make people feel valued. She listened attentively, spoke wisely and loved sincerely. She never measured people by their social status, wealth or influence. Instead, she saw every individual through the eyes of compassion and dignity. She understood that every human being carried the image of God and deserved to be treated with love and respect.

Perhaps one of her greatest accomplishments was the beautiful family she nurtured. She raised seven children who became beneficiaries of her wisdom, discipline, faith and unconditional love. Beyond them, she delighted in the lives of more than twenty grandchildren, pouring into them the same affection and values that had defined her motherhood.
As a mother, Mama understood that genuine love includes discipline. She believed that correction was an expression of care, not punishment. So, she raised her children with firmness tempered by affection, ensuring they grew into responsible individuals grounded in integrity, respect and faith. Her discipline was never harsh or demeaning. Instead, it was rooted in love and inspired by a sincere desire to see her children become the very best versions of themselves.

Her children lovingly describe her as “the most beautiful woman ever.” That beauty was far more profound than physical appearance. It was the beauty of a pure heart, a gentle spirit and a generous soul. It was reflected in her smile that welcomed everyone, her words that healed wounded hearts and her actions that consistently placed others before herself.

Today, her children stand as living monuments to her devotion. The values instilled continue to guide them, and the lessons she taught continue to shape their lives.
One of the undeniable testimonies of Mama’s positive influence in shaping the lives of her children is the life and accomplishments of her first son, Professor John Kennedy Opara (OFR, JP); a distinguished Nigerian academic, public administrator and entrepreneur who has made significant contributions to public service and agricultural development. Widely recognized as the pioneer Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission (NCPC), his exceptional service to the nation has earned him prestigious national honours, including the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) and the title of Justice of Peace (JP).

During his tenure, Professor Opara modernized Christian pilgrimage management across Nigeria by instilling institutional transparency and structural accountability. Furthermore, he successfully forged strong diplomatic and administrative relationships with key international destinations, most notably Israel. In the private sector, Professor Opara serves as the Chairman of the CSS Group of Companies, a diverse conglomerate active in agriculture, real estate, energy, and education.

Through CSS Global Integrated Farms, he introduced an integrated “7Ps Business Model” (Potential, Planning, Planting, Producing, Processing, Packaging, and Protecting) to process raw crops into food products and animal feed. Leveraging Israeli-inspired agricultural techniques, his initiatives explicitly focus on empowering thousands of Nigerian youths with modern farming skills to combat unemployment and enhance national food security.

To each grandchild, she was a storyteller, teacher, prayer warrior and loving grandmother whose embrace communicated safety and acceptance. She rejoiced in their achievements, comforted them during disappointments and prayed continually for their future. So, through the children and the grandchildren, her influence continues to extend into future generations.

So, we can all see that Ezinne live a balanced life of purpose and impact. For to her family, she was much more than a mother. She was their anchor, their teacher, their counsellor and their greatest supporter. To her community, she was a mother whose embrace knew no boundaries. To the Church, she was a faithful servant. To the poor, she was hope. To the broken-hearted, she was comfort. To everyone fortunate enough to know her, she was simply “Mama.”

So, as we reflect over Mama’s remarkable life, we recognise that her greatest achievements cannot be captured by titles or positions. They are found in the tears she wiped away, the hungry she fed, the discouraged she strengthened, the faith she inspired and the love she generously shared. She taught us that kindness is never wasted and she showed us that humility is true greatness. She demonstrated that leadership is service and that faith becomes meaningful only when translated into compassionate action.
Though death has taken her physical presence from us, it cannot erase the countless memories she created or diminish the enduring influence of her example. For every act of kindness performed because she inspired it, every prayer offered because she taught someone to trust God and every family strengthened because of her guidance becomes part of the living monument she leaves behind.

So, while tears flow freely because of her demise, they are accompanied by gratitude. We thank God for lending us such an extraordinary woman. We thank Him for eighty-three years of extraordinary life, filled with purpose, faith and love. We thank Him for allowing us to experience the blessing of knowing Ezinne Christiana Opara. Her earthly assignment has been completed. She has fought the good fight. She has finished the race. She has kept the faith. We can imagine her hearing those glorious words from her Saviour: “Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.”

So, as we bid her farewell, let us remember that Mama would not want us to be consumed by sorrow alone. Rather, she would urge us to continue the work she began. She would ask us to love more deeply, forgive more readily, serve more generously and trust God more completely. Thus, the greatest tribute we can pay her is not merely to speak of her virtues but to imitate them.

To her beloved children, grandchildren, relatives and friends, your grief is understandable because your loss is immense. But your comfort lies in knowing that you were privileged to share life with an exceptional woman whose love has permanently shaped your lives. Her physical voice may now be silent, but her lessons, prayers and example will continue to guide you.

Ezinne Christiana Opara, JP, leaves behind far more than memories. She leaves a legacy of faith that will strengthen generations, a legacy of charity that will inspire compassionate hearts, a legacy of integrity that will challenge future leaders and a legacy of motherhood that will remain an enduring blessing. Though heaven has welcomed another saint, earth will forever remember one of its finest daughters.

Mama, you came, you loved, you served and you conquered. You fulfilled your divine assignment with dignity and grace. Your hands lifted countless souls, your heart embraced humanity and your life glorified God. So, sleep peacefully, our beloved Ezinne. Sleep peacefully, Ugochinyere Mbaise. Sleep peacefully, faithful servant of God. Your work is done, your race is finished, and your crown now awaits you. May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.
