27-year-old Nigerian mum in UK died by suicide after mental health struggles

An inquest in the United Kingdom has concluded that 27-year-old Nigerian mother-of-one, Beatrice Solomon, died by suicide.

Beatrice was found unresponsive at her home on Norris Road in Stanfield, Stoke-on-Trent, on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.

According to evidence presented during the inquest, her husband, 40-year-old Damian Michael Butler, had left for work as a delivery driver at about 4:30 p.m. He returned approximately two hours later and discovered her unresponsive. Emergency responders were called to the scene, but paramedics pronounced her dead at 6:21 p.m.

Police officer PC Hinchliffe told the inquest that investigations found no evidence of third-party involvement in her death.

Giving evidence, Damian said Beatrice had experienced mental health difficulties over the previous year, which he attributed to ongoing issues involving Stoke-on-Trent City Council. He also told the court that he later became aware she had previously attempted to take her own life.

A pathologist determined that the medical cause of death was oxygen deprivation.

Delivering her conclusion, Coroner Li Hammond-Naylor ruled that Beatrice died by suicide.

The coroner said the evidence indicated that Beatrice had researched and planned her actions before her death, adding that her thoughts were with the deceased’s family and loved ones.

Beatrice, who worked as a carer, relocated from Nigeria to Stoke-on-Trent in November 2023. She is survived by her young son and her siblings.
