2027: Opposition Has Failed to Offer Nigerians a Credible Alternative to Tinubu – Fashola

Former Lagos State Governor and ex-Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola, has said Nigeria’s opposition parties have yet to present a convincing alternative to President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election.

According to Fashola, the opposition appears to be more focused on unseating the current administration than on presenting practical policies and solutions capable of addressing the country’s challenges.

Speaking during an interview on TVC on Wednesday, the former governor stressed that the 2027 elections should be decided by competing ideas and policy proposals rather than personalities or political sentiments.

He argued that opposition parties have not done enough to convince Nigerians that they possess a better blueprint for governance.

“There is nothing exciting from the other side (opposition) other than those who want a change of government just wanting the president to go, but to what? What are you giving us instead?” Fashola said.

Fashola noted that he would have preferred a political atmosphere where opposition parties clearly outline their programmes and vision, enabling Nigerians to compare their plans with those of the ruling government before making an informed choice at the polls.

According to him, elections should be driven by robust debates on national issues rather than mere calls for a change in leadership.

He added that Nigerians deserve to know where political parties and their candidates stand on critical issues such as taxation, security, infrastructure development, economic growth and other policies that directly affect citizens’ lives.

The former minister maintained that presenting clear policy alternatives would strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process by allowing voters to make decisions based on ideas rather than political affiliations.

Reflecting on his years in public office, Fashola described serving as Governor of Lagos State and later as Minister of Works as the greatest privilege of his life, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the development of both Lagos State and Nigeria.

His remarks come amid increasing political realignments and preparations by political parties ahead of the 2027 general election, with debates over governance, economic reforms and national development expected to dominate the campaign season.
