2026 World Cup: Brobbey, Gakpo shine as Netherlands overwhelm Sweden with five-goal statement win

The Netherlands delivered one of the most dominant performances of the tournament so far, sweeping aside Sweden 5-1 to move within touching distance of the World Cup round of 32.

Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo both scored twice as Ronald Koeman’s side produced a ruthless attacking performance that exposed Sweden’s defensive weaknesses and reinforced their status as strong contenders in Group F.

The result puts the Dutch in a strong position with qualification now all but secured, while Sweden face a tense final group match to keep their knockout hopes alive.

Fast start decides the game

The Netherlands wasted no time asserting control, scoring inside five minutes after a rapid move that sliced through Sweden’s midfield and defence in just seven passes.

Brian Brobbey finished off the move after linking up with Cody Gakpo, who delivered a low cross from the left wing.

The striker doubled his tally 12 minutes later, reacting quickest inside the box to convert Denzel Dumfries’ delivery.

Sweden briefly threatened a response when Gustaf Lagerbielke found the net before half-time, but the goal was ruled out for offside, ending any momentum the Scandinavians had built.

Gakpo and Brobbey seal dominance

Any hopes of a Swedish comeback disappeared almost immediately after the restart.

Gakpo extended the lead in the opening minutes of the second half before adding his second shortly after the hour mark, finishing off a move involving substitute Crysencio Summerville.

Sweden managed a consolation through Anthony Elanga, who finished neatly after a well-timed run in behind the Dutch defence.

However, Summerville capped an impressive cameo by scoring late on to complete the emphatic victory.

The result means the Netherlands now sit top of Group F, needing only a point in their final group match against Tunisia to confirm progression.

Sweden, meanwhile, must avoid defeat against Japan to remain in contention for the knockout stage.
